At a time when the auto sector in India is witnessing the worst slowdown of the decade, the biggest automobile show, - 12th Auto Expo 2014 - will get underway next week ( February 5-11) with the hope that the exhibition would help the auto sector get back on the right track.

The 12th edition of the bi-annual event will be host to unveiling of 70 new models of which  26 will be global.

The Indian auto industry has been reeling under a prolonged slowdown, with annual car sales dipping for the first time in 11 years in 2013 to 9.59 per cent.

Speaking about the depressed market conditions and how the expo will help reignite growth of the auto sector, SIAM president Vikram Kirloskar said on Thursday "We are hoping that this Auto Expo will draw them (visitors) out to trigger demand, although the revival in the automobile market is unlikely unless there is a revival of economic growth."

He also announced that the show will see 15 global cars being unveiled.

Regarding the number of exhibitors in this edition, Kirloskar said: "This time around, we have 55 exhibitors at Greater Noida in comparison to 45 in the last edition of the Expo." However, the number of exhibitors at the component show, to be held from February 6-11,  will be 1,100 while it was 1,500 in the last edition.

This year's auto expo and the component fair which are traditionally held in the same venue will be held at two venues because of space constraints at Pragati Maidan, Delhi which has seen all the 12 auto expos that have been organised till date.

Kirloskar hoped that the government would look into the issue of providing adequate space so that in future the event could be held at a single venue.

The expo is being co-organised by the Society of Indian Automobile Manufacturers (SIAM), the Confederation of Indian Industry (CII) and the Automotive Component Manufacturers Association of India (ACMA).

The organisers expect 100,000 footfalls per day at the expo.
