Volkswagen India to Sell Polo Crossover From Friday - Wall Street Journal

NEW DELHI—Volkswagen AG will start selling Friday a crossover version of its Polo subcompact hatchback in India as part of a program to extend the offerings under the Polo brand and boost the company's sales in the forthcoming festival season.

The Cross Polo will cost 775,000 rupees ($11,923) at showrooms in New Delhi, the auto maker said Thursday. The car has a 1.2-liter diesel engine with a five-speed manual gearbox.

Volkswagen sells also the Polo with a 1.2-liter gasoline engine with the option of either a five-speed manual gearbox or a seven-speed automatic gearbox.

Auto makers in India are introducing new cars ahead of the festival season. They are hoping that sales, which have remained subdued for more than a year, will rebound during festivals when India's majority Hindus consider it auspicious to make new purchases.

The south Indian festival of Onam will take place in September, followed by others, including the main festival of Diwali in November.

Arvind Saxena, managing director for Volkswagen passenger cars in India, said the Cross Polo "has been created for those looking at a premium hatchback in a sporty crossover style."

The car has black plastic molding around the wheel arches and bumpers, halogen headlamps and roof rails, alloy wheels and black upholstery. It has features such as anti-lock braking system and air bags.

Volkswagen makes the Polo, the Vento compact car as well as the Jetta and Passat sedans at a factory in western India's Maharashtra state. It also imports and markets the Phaeton sedan and the Touareg sport-utility vehicle.
