Hero MotoCorp to unveil 150cc diesel two-wheeler - Daily News & Analysis

Hero MotoCorp, the biggest two-wheeler maker in the country, on Wednesday unveiled its 150cc diesel two-wheeler concept – RNT – in New Delhi. The company also showcased four other models including a hybrid scooter, which are expected to be launched in the next fiscal.
According to experts, this is for the first time any Indian two-wheeler manufacturer has come up a small diesel engine on a two-wheeler. However, other details on development of the engine and the development costs is not known yet.
"RNT will be suitable for commercial applications in the domestic market and will also be sold in international markets. We have never seen a concept like this, so whether it will work or not in the Indian market is still a question mark," said an automotive expert.
"The move looks more like a brand building strategy, to showcase their capabilities," said Puneet Gupta, associate director, IHS Automotive Sales Forecasting.
"As we go ahead, we would like to add accessories, variants to the model...It will have usage in various countries besides India due to the kind of features it has," Pawan Munjal (pictured), managing director and CEO of Hero Motocorp, told reporters.
Barring RNT, which is a concept, all four models, including the hybrid scooter (petrol and electric) would be launched during the next fiscal," the company said. The 150cc Xtreme Sports bike will be launched in the first quarter of next fiscal, 110cc scooter Dash in the second quarter and Leap (hybrid scooter) and 250cc sports bike - HXR250R -- will be launched in the second half of fiscal 2015.
RNT, Leap and HXR250R are completely new products, while Dash and Xtreme Sports are based on existing platforms.
Speaking on the hybrid Leap, Munjal said the company would first launch the vehicle in western markets and then bring it to India. "The hybrid scooter will have a range of around 340 km on one single charge and a full tank," said Munjal.
Leap, the first electric-serial-hybrid scooter from India, has been designed keeping in mind Hero's global markets. With agency inputs
