Maruti Suzuki, the country's biggest carmaker, on Wednesday recalled 1,492 cars spanning the Ertiga, Swift, DZire and the A-Star models manufactured between 19 and 26 October this year due to faulty steering columns.
Maruti will inspect the steering columns of 306 units of its multi purpose vehicle (MPV) Ertiga, 592 units of the Swift hatchbacks, 581 models of DZire and 13 units of the A-Star.
The company clarified that the exercise was restricted to only domestic models and not the ones exported in the said period. "If the steering column is found defective, the company will replace it free of cost," Maruti said in a statement.
Maruti had recalled 13,157 diesel cars in 2011 to inspect faulty parts in the Swift, Ritz and the DZire manufactured in 2010 (see table).
The government is planning a mandatory policy for car recalls. More than 4 lakh vehicles made by various manufacturers have been recalled in the past two years, including mega recalls by Ford India and General Motors.
In September this year, Ford had recalled 1.66 lakh units of its small car Figo and the sedan Classic. In one of the controversial recalls, General Motors had recalled 1.14 lakh units of its MPV Tavera in July this year.
