"Maruti will inspect the steering column for 1,492 vehicles manufactured between October 19 and October 26 this year. If the steering column is found defective, the company will replace the steering column free of cost," the company said.
The recall will see the company inspect 306 units of Ertiga MPV, 592 of Swift hatchback, 581 of Dzire sedan and 13 units of A-Star mini car. The new steering column has been despatched to dealer workshops.
Maruti said the exercise is limited to vehicles within the above specified range and does not pertain to any other vehicle of the company or any of its exports. "Maruti dealers will contact owners of all vehicles in the above range," it said. The last big recall made by the company was in February 2010 when it recalled about one lakh units of its flagship export model 'A-Star' to replace a faulty fuel pump part.Automobile companies have been proactive in recalling vehicles in case of safety issues since industry body Siam initiated a voluntary recall policy last July, taking the total recalls to over 3 lakh units. However, the government now wants to mandate vehicle recalls after GM India admitted to "inconsistencies in emission results" that saw it recall 1.14 lakh units of Chevrolet Tavera MPV manufactured between 2005 and 2013.
A government committee probe had found the company indulge in "corporate fraud" over the matter. GM India had also recalled 4,000 units of the diesel variant of its Sail model to address a potential engine issue.
