One-Third of BlackBerry Apps Developed by One Company - PC Magazine

BlackBerry World SB44

When BlackBerry proudly announced that more than 120,000 apps were available on the BlackBerry 10 platform, the company left out one small detail: One-third of them were created by the same developer.

That's right: One team of Hong Kong-based designers has been busy building Easy Smiley Pack, Search for Amazon, Petrol Usage Tracker, Barcode Scanner, CIA World Factbook, and hundreds upon thousands more, according to BerryReview.

Dubbed S4BB Limited, the "mobile software experts" have more than 48,000 different applications in the BlackBerry App World store — almost one-third of the entire marketplace.

According to the S4BB website, the group is a "young, leading edge" company that specializes in the development of mobile applications. "Their BlackBerry products are market leading and cover nearly all aspects of what is possible on a mobile device," the site said.

BlackBerry did not immediately respond to PCMag's request for comment, but told BGR that S4BB Limited's approach is not exactly the company's problem.

"Developers in all app stores employ a number of different monetization tactics," a spokesman said. "BlackBerry World is an open market for developers and we let market forces dictate the success or failure of these tactics."

SB44 Limited did not immediately respond to PCMag's request for comment.

In March, PCMag found that of the 102 popular apps on Android and iOS, only 34 percent of the apps had BlackBerry 10 versions or equivalents, while 63 percent had Windows Phone 8 versions or equivalents.
