LG Unveils Flagship G2 Smartphone With New 'Rear Key' Concept - PC Magazine

LG G2

LG today unveiled its new, flagship G2 smartphone, the first handset introduced under its "G" premium device series.

As was rumored, the device "shifts the paradigm in smartphone design" by placing all the buttons on the back of the phone, making it the first smartphone without side buttons, LG said. The G2 boasts a large 5.2-inch Full HD display with 1080-by-1920 pixel resolution, and a tiny 2.65mm bezel on the side edge.

The G2 will be rolling out in more than 130 countries over the next eight weeks, starting in South Korea and followed by releases in North America and Europe. LG did not provide specific availability dates or pricing for the new smartphone, but said they will vary by region and carrier.

T-Mobile did announce Wednesday that it would carry the LG G2, with pricing and availability to "be shared in the coming weeks." Along with the LG Optimus F6 and LG Optimus F3, the G2 will be made available on the carrier's Simple Choice Plan, which provides unlimited talk, text, and Web with up to 500MB of high-speed data for a single line on T-Mobile's 4G LTE network for $50 per month, with 2.5GB of high-speed data available for an additional $10 or unlimited 4G data for an extra $20 per month.

LG said its new "rear key" concept came from the realization when studying users that as phones get larger, it is becoming more difficult to properly access side keys. Users will have more control with the main buttons located on the back of the phone, since this is where the index finger is naturally positioned when holding a phone, LG said. In the company's research, moving the buttons to the back of the phone resulted in fewer dropped phones when adjusting volume while talking.

"Our definition of innovation today is technology that truly resonates with consumers. We have always listened to and learned from consumers in pursuit of innovation," Jong-seok Park, president and CEO of LG Electronics, said at a launch event for the G2 in New York.

"We took these insights to new heights in developing LG G2, the most exciting and ambitious mobile phone in our company's history."

LG's new flagship smartphone has some other twists. Long-pressing the rear-mounted volume keys will launch the note-taking app QuickMemo and the camera. In addition, the phone can be powered on by simply tapping twice on the display.

As expected, the G2 is powered by a 2.26GHz Qualcomm Snapdragon 800 processor and runs Android Jelly Bean 4.2.2. As for other specs, it boasts a 13-megapixel camera on the back, as well as a 2.1-megapixel front-facing camera, and packs a 3,000mAh battery. It measures in at a slim 138.5-by-70.9-by-8.9mm and comes in either black or white, with options for 16GB or 32GB of onboard storage.

The high-resolution camera comes with so-called Optical Image Stabilize technology to prevent blurring, delivering sharper images when in motion or shooting in dim environments. The G2 is also the first smartphone on the market to feature 24-bit/192kHz Hi-Fi playback, which "reproduces studio-like quality sound, far superior to a CD," according to LG.

The G2 comes with Graphic RAM technology, which LG said reduces the display's energy use by up to 26 percent and increases overall battery life by approximately 10 percent. There are also a number of user experience features built into the device, such as "answer me," which automatically answers calls when the phone is raised to a user's ear, and "guest mode," which displays only pre-selected apps when someone else needs to use the device.
