Report by India Education bureau, New Delhi: Intel India and Educomp, today, held an interactive event to connect with young parents about introducing technology to children at an early stage. The program shared a perspective on how in addition to being the epicenter of information, a personal computing device can also support positive interaction between parents and their children. Present at the occasion were Mr. Sandeep Aurora, Director, Marketing and Market Development, Intel SouthAsia along with Dr. Bindu Rana, Head of Research and Development, Educomp Solutions and Ms. Rita Kaul, Principal, The Millennium School.

Personal Computing devices are a useful tool for parents to help expand their child's learning and development in a fun and interactive way. The presence of a PC at home can positively impact a child's progressby helping them advance through cognitive learning and education in a safe environment. Outside of the home, computers are fast becoming a standard tool for educational activities at various schools across the world.

"Today we live in an era where children are exposed to technology from their early years through the inevitable presence of multiple screens from the smartphone to television in their lives. The place that technology now has in our lives is a special one, which has added a new dimension to how we learn, interact and take on-board information. When used efficiently and effectively it can be a truly wonderful part of a child's life" said Mr Sandeep Aurora.

alking about the impact of introducing a PC in a household with children, Dr. Bindu Rana commented "In the past some parents were reluctant to introduce children to technology as computing devices were viewed as a distraction which would turn them away from studies. However, today technology is viewed as a facilitator which can help hone a child's skills. Be it helping a child discover his inner artist or facilitating a child through their studies, technology is changing the way children learn today, and making it fun. In a family with toddlers, parents should assist the child by exploring the PC together."

"Computers are redefining the contours of life in general and they can be employed positively to supplement formal education. Computing activities may help increase a student's level of competence by acting as a complimentary device to books and other educational tools. But the emphasis must be on 'how' this technology is used to stimulate and create connections among children and must never be used as a sole source of stimulation" added Ms. Rita Kaul.

A personal computing device is not a baby sitter, but it has the ability to be an incredibly powerful developmental tool by expanding a toddler's learning horizon. Today personal computing devices come in various forms like the smartphones, tablets, traditional notebooks and desktops to newer form factors like All in One PCs, UltrabooksTM and 2 in1 devices that act as a tablet when you want it and a laptop when you need it.

Personal computing device based applications are a great way to engage kids in active learning. Today there are apps that reinforce learning and several of them are available free of cost online. As with all learning, games and books rotate the games and apps that are being used to play with the children to assist in their development and experience.

"Interacting with technology can be an amazing and engaging journey of learning and discovery but it should not become the only tool. Readily-available parental controls and computer safety tools help you monitor your child's activity online. Technology usage should be moderated and monitored by the parents and children must spend time reading actual books and playing sports and games in the great outdoors" said Mr. Sandeep Aurora in conclusion of the event.
