Fall in the number of tablets shipped as Apple delays product launch - Telegraph.co.uk

Tom Mainelli, a research director at the International Data Corporation (IDC), which compiled the figures, said: "A new iPad launch always piques consumer interest in the tablet category and traditionally has helped both Apple and its competitors.

"With no new iPads, the market slowed for many vendors, and that's likely to continue into the third quarter. However, by the fourth quarter we expect new products from Apple, Amazon and others to drive impressive growth in the market."

Other data released by the IDC showed Android was the top operating system for tablets, overtaking iOS from the equivalent point last year. Android has seen a 169.2 per cent increase in the number of units shipped year-on-year, compared with a drop of 14.1 per cent for iOS.

Windows has shown an increase of 527 per cent over the year but still only makes up four per cent of the market, well behind iOS and Android.

"The tablet market is still evolving and vendors can rise and fall quickly as a result," said Ryan Reith, a manager at the IDC. "Apple aside, the remaining vendors are still very much figuring out which platform strategy will be successful over the long run.

"To date, Android has been far more successful that the Windows 8 platform. However, Microsoft-fuelled products are starting to make notable progress in the market."
