Joaquin Almunia, the European Union's antitrust chief, said Google Inc. (GOOG) may be able to complete its settlement with EU regulators in the second half of the year. Almunia said today that he may be able to start testing Google's settlement offer with rivals and customers "in the coming months." "We could have an accord after the summer vacations, if this all works," he told reporters in Paris. "One could see this as a possible date." Google last month submitted an offer to regulators to settle the antitrust probe after Almunia asked the Mountain View, California-based company to January to address allegations that the company promotes its own specialist search-services, copies rivals' travel and restaurant reviews, and has agreements with websites and software developers that stifle competition in the advertising industry. He first told Google in May that he wanted to settle the case. Almunia said today that he has received further complaints against the company and that he hasn't yet decided whether to formally investigate them.
