HP to launch phone-enabled tablets in India - The Australian Financial Review

Hewlett-Packard is making a return to the mobile business.

The PC company announced it is launching a pair of "voice tablets" - a combination of tablet and smartphone - in India next month.

The HP Slate6 will feature a 6-inch screen, while the Slate7 bumps up to a 7-inch screen. Both will run the latest version of Google's Android mobile operating system, and boast a quad-core processor, front speakers, front- and rear-facing cameras and 16 gigabytes of storage with the option to expand via microSD card.

"This is an exciting new category that represents a meaningful growth opportunity for HP," said Ron Coughlin, senior vice president of HP's Consumer Personal Systems Group, in a statement.

HP did not say whether the "voice tablets" would launch elsewhere.

The concept of the tablet-smartphone hybrid is not new. Companies have Samsung have dived into the "phablet" market with devices such as the Galaxy Note.

The devices are the first since HP's failed attempts to enter the smartphone market with the acquisition of Palm in 2010 for $US1.2 billion.

But gadgets such as the Palm Pre and HP Touchpad tablet didn't gain traction in a market dominated by Apple iOS and Google Android. One year later, HP shuttered its mobile division.
