Though the company has introduced two other handsets, but Datawind's PocketSurfer 3G5 with 5-inch display @ Rs 6,500 should be a hit in India
Datawind's recently introduced handsets in the country are expected to do well here. Though its Aakash tablets were huge disappointment in the market and it was a sour experience for many, nonetheless its new handsets are expected to do rather well due to several reasons. At least two handsets that run on Android look very promising indeed with affordable price tag and reasonably good specifications.
The Indian smartphone market has seen the huge success that the phablets or 5-incher or bigger handsets have brought to local start ups. Some companies have become the main players in the phablet market. Micromax has beaten everyone when it comes to phablet in the Indian market and has already launched its handsets in Russia. It is also launching its smartphones in Romania in January 2014. This mammoth success of phablets in the Indian market is encouraging many tech companies to jump into the fray and reap the benefits.
The Aakash tablet manufacturer Datawind had made announcements a few weeks ago that it wil launch handsets with free data plan. But so far we don't know about the data plan. Nonetheless the handsets are out and they look good.
The best bet for the company is its PocketSurfer 3G5. The handset or the phablet comes with good entry level specifications including 5-inch display and it is powered by dual core 1.2GHz Cortex A7 chip. Like most Indian smartphones it comes with dual SIM slots and run on Android 4.2 Jelly Bean. When it comes to camera, it comes with 5MP rear camera and a front facing VGA camera.
