BANGALORE: Traffic police kicked off 'Sugama Savari', a campaign for safe commuting by autorickshaws.
The campaign, with film actor Sudeep as brand ambassador, also launched free app downloadable on smart phones for commuters to evaluate autorickshaw drivers and to register their complaints and appreciation.
"Anything that is uploaded for or against any auto will be automatically linked to the city traffic police server. We'd like rate the individual's performance and behaviour to laud their good services. At the same time, we'll book cases if we find them committing offences. The software, developed by an entrepreneur, is designed for this," said additional commissioner of police (traffic) B Dayanand.
He said there are over 1 lakh autorickshaws and they account for less than 3% of the vehicle population. "Their services reach over 30% of daily commuters. We have to do something positive to repose confidence in them and Sugama Savari is only one such effort to make the drivers accountable," he added.
He added that one-third of these three-wheelers may not be registered. "Two major complaints against autos are route refusal and excess fare. The traffic police will work with various unions to create sufficient awareness. We also plan to inculcate soft skills among drivers through training classes and workshops," he said.
