Users of the Google Hangouts and Google Talk services may have to temporarily stop using these services as there is a chance their messages may go to the wrong recipients.
A report on TechCrunch said its sources and tipsters suspect a bug that prevents the Google services from routing messages correctly.
It added the issue may be related to an ongoing technical transition from one service to the other.
Besides, it said Google had just updated Hangouts for Android, "so it's also possible something in that change to the software is resulting in the misfiring messages."
A check with Google's Apps Status Dashboard as of 5:50 p.m., "Google Talk is not functioning correctly and we are continuing to work to restore full functionality."
But another check as of 7:40 p.m. showed the last message at 7:15 p.m. with an icon indicating a "service disruption," but Google claimed the issue had been resolved.
As of 10:40 p.m. Manila time, the apps status dashboard still had an orange light, indicating a "service disruption."
Until the service is fully restored, TechCrunch advised users to "either avoid using Hangouts or Talk altogether for the time being, or at least to limit yourself to sending messages that you wouldn't mind being read by anyone in your contact list."
"This is a fairly serious breach of privacy, so it's likely Google will move quickly to resolve the bug...," it added. — ELR, GMA News
