Cortana: An All-Encompassing Virtual Assistant for the Windows Platform - Capital Technologies

Microsoft's Windows mobile platform has to catch up fast so as not to lose the battle for innovation, user-centeredness, design and popularity. Its Bing search engine is hardly making any money, and Windows-powered devices are fighting a tough battle against iPhones, iPads and Androids. But the tech giant is relentless in introducing new products and technologies in its attempt to lead the mobile industry. In fact, Microsoft is reportedly developing Cortana, its new virtual assistance system like that of Android's Google Now and iPhone's Siri.

Not Just Another Virtual Assistant

Microsoft derived its new AI-powered assistant from an artificially intelligent character in the famous video game, Halo. Because of its AI capabilities, we can expect that Cortana would work much like Siri and Google Now. Both can assist in executing essential tasks, such as making a phone call, checking the weather, texting a particular person and finding the nearest pizza bar in the city. However, Microsoft highlighted that Cortana will be able to do more things. It starts by what learning its users' needs and personal inclinations.

Unifying the Windows Experiencing

Cortana is designed to work not just for Windows smartphones, but also for all other Windows devices and Microsoft services. This means that the virtual assistant will learn the ways you use your devices and the internet to give you a more personal feedback. To do this, Microsoft will harness its Satori technology, the artificial intelligence behind Bing's ability to display complementary options and results based on a user's query or search question.

Can Cortana Change the Competition?

Cortana has a lot of lessons to learn from Siri and Google Now. While we know that Microsoft will aim to be different from the two leading smart assistants, Cortana can filter through their weaknesses and strengths in order to avoid their major pitfalls. One of Cortana's winning features is its ability to predict a users underlying or possible needs, hence a  more productive search experience that quickly leads users to the most accurate result or solution. Moreover this intelligent mix of complex algorithms may also open doors to great discoveries related to a one's interests.

Microsoft's acquisition of Nokia in 2014 presents a lot of possibilities on how both could maximize each other's resources and creative power to lead the mobile industry. Cortana is just the tip of the iceberg, because these two tech giants will be more capable of accomplishing ground-breaking innovations once they start operating as one.
