Samsung's smartwatch plans just became a little clearer: The U.S. Patent and Trademark Office (USPTO) recently published an application for a wearable tech design created by the South Korean company. The document, filed on July 29, requests a USPTO trademark for "Samsung Galaxy Gear." The tech giant identifies the machinery as "Wearable digital electronic devices in the form of a wristwatch, wrist band, or bangle capable of providing access to the Internet and for sending and receiving phone calls, electronic mails, and messages." Samsung Galaxy Gear—compatible with smartphones, tablets, and PCs—would also provide wireless storage, transmission of data and messages, and management of personal information. There is no word on whether the device will be Android-powered, or run a different or new operating system. Early rumors of a Samsung smartwatch were confirmed in March, when the company announced that it has been working on its own wearable tech device for some time. "We've been preparing the watch product for so long. We are working very hard to get ready for it. We are preparing products for the future, and the watch is definitely one of them," Samsung executive vice president Younghee Lee said at the time. This isn't Samsung's first attempt at smartwatches, though. In 2009, the company released the S9110, dubbed the "world's slimmest watchphone," with a 1.76-inch touch screen and Outlook email. While that early offering didn't quite take the world by storm, Samsung has not given up. Last month, the company showed off advanced wearable computers and smartphones during the MobileBeat conference in San Francisco. Samsung is also gearing up to unpack its newest non-wearable mobile device —likely the next-generation Galaxy Note III phablet—at a Sept. 4 event in Berlin.
