Piaggio lashes out on quadricycles norms clearance in India - Moneycontrol.com

Piaggio Vehicles, the only major automaker that has quadricycles plying on European roads lashed out at the way in which norms for this category of vehicles were recently cleared in India. On July 2, CNBC-TV18 reported that the Transport Minister Oscar Fernandes had approved the draft quadricycle norms. Although, there is still two-and-a-half months more for the final quadricycle notifications, Ravi Chopra, CMD, Piaggio India feels that there should have been more debate on the norms. "This is my perception. There's been a short-circuit, we've short-circuited Society of Indian Automobile Manufacturers(SIAM). Maybe the decision is right, I am not commenting on the decision, but the approach may not be right. The approach will mean go through the process of getting SIAM to unanimously propose something with specifications," Chopra said in an interview to CNBC-TV18. He feels that's auto manufacturers are still divided over quadricycle norms. "I am only against one aspect that is that assuming that you're having specifications that are time tested, perhaps that's what the government is going to do, you must provide a level playing field to the industry. That is in fairness and keeping in ethics of doing business," Chopra added. Meanwhile, Bajaj Auto , which is the only automobile maker in India that has developed four-wheeled passenger carrier, plans to launch its RE60 by end of the current financial year. Bajaj Auto had been at loggerheads with many other automobile companies like Maruti Suzuki over quadricycle norms. The draft gazette notification (for the four-wheeled vehicle) has gone to the law ministry. After the law ministry, it will get published in the government papers. After that comments will be invited from people.
