Hewlett-Packard (NYSE: HPQ) this week took the wraps off a new laptop-tablet hybrid that runs on the Android operating system. The SlateBook X2 is priced at $479.99, and comes with both the tablet and keyboard dock portion in the same package. It is not possible to buy the tablet as a stand-alone item. The specifications of the SlateBook X2 include a 10.1-inch display with a resolution of 1920x1200 and it is powered under the hood by a quad-core Tegra 4 chip from Nvidia clocked to 1.9GHz. The two batteries within the tablet and keyboard dock deliver up to 14 hours of battery life, while the tablet itself comes with 64GB of storage. The dock also offers USB ports for peripherals or adding external storage. Much like Windows RT was tweaked from the baseline Windows 8 operating system, HP has made minor changes to Android on the SlateBook X2. As reported by Computerworld, enhancements include a simple file manager, the keyboard dock has specific Android buttons, and preloaded software allows for the creation of Microsoft (NASDAQ: MSFT)-Office compatible documents. The SlateBook X2 can also display a mouse cursor on the screen, which makes it particularly useful for using in laptop mode with the built-in touchpad. Other than the SlateBook X2, HP also unveiled the Split X2 hybrid that runs on Windows 8 and is priced at $799.99. Both hybrids will be sold in the United States in August, though the company declined to comment on worldwide availability.
