Duster now No.2 in UVs - Daily News & Analysis

It's just over ten months since Renault India's Duster hit the road in July last year, and it is already one of the most preferred cars – sports utility vehicle (SUV), if you will – in the country. Despite the automobile industry slowdown, sales of the Duster have managed to maintain momentum. Current numbers show that the Duster has overtaken Mahindra and Mahindra's Scorpio to emerge as the highest selling sports utility vehicle (SUV) in the country. What's more, the Duster is now the No.2 utility vehicle (UV), a category that encompasses SUVs and multi utility vehicles (MUVs). According to the Society of Indian Automobile Manufacturers (SIAM), Renault sold 5,362 units of the Duster in April, next only to M&M's Bolero in the UV category, which sold 9,766 units.  Maruti Suzuki's Ertiga sold 5,168 units, followed by Maruti's Omni and the Scorpio. SIAM data show that the top five UVs last fiscal were the Bolero, Toyota Innova, Ertiga, Scorpio and M&M's XUV 500. For Renault India, the Duster has been the most successful vehicle so far. Most of its other models failed to pick up sales. The company sold 545 units of the Scala, 358 units of the Pulse, 39 units of the Fluence and 10 units of the Koleos in April. "The Duster is one of the most awarded cars for Renault India. Our customers are very happy," said Sumit Sawhney, ED for marketing and sales.   Sales of the Duster  peaked in March at 6,313 units, but dropped almost 15% in April. Competition is also expected to intensify now with Ford India launching its compact SUV, the EcoSport, in the next couple of months. The company is optimistic of maintaining its momentum with the Duster despite increasing competition and slower UV sales. "April is traditionally a slower month for car sales. The UV segment has seen strong growth in the past one year and we expect the segment to expand further with the new entrants," said Sawhney.
