Sony Xperia Tablet Z vs Apple iPad Specs Comparison - PDF Devices

by Andy Brock on March 2, 2013

Sony Xperia Tablet Z vs Apple iPad 4The other day we posted an article about the recently announced Sony Xperia Tablet Z. It comes with some pretty interesting specs and features – one of which is the waterproof capability.

Is it just me or does the waterproof feature sound pretty cool? However, it is not something that I would necessarily look for in a tablet.

So what are the features that matter? In addition and really more importantly, how does it stack up against the iPad?

Specs for Sony Xperia Tablet Z

Droid Life wrote that "The Tablet Z will be available in both white and black, 16GB and 32GB storage options, priced at $500 and $600 dollars for WiFi only" and went on to mention that the "Xperia Tablet Z features a gorgeous 1920 x 1200 display, 8MP rear camera, Android 4.1 (upgradable to 4.2 after launch), and runs the popular Snapdragon S4 Pro processor."

Lets check out the specs for latest iPad or better known as the iPad 4.

Specs for iPad 4

PC Tablet wrote a great article summarizing the latest iPad specs, features and price details.

In addition, the author goes on to say that "Google's mobile OS Android based tablets keep hitting the market one day after the other, but still, none of Android tablets has replaced the popularity bar or Apple's tablet iPad. No Android tablet even stands near to the features of iPad".

I tend to agree. Not because the Android platform is substandard by any means. I do think that there are some really cool features and the product continues to evolve and mature.

But I think the main reason is just the romanticism that we have for Apple coupled with what seems like a fractured platform with numerous hardware manufactures.

Soapbox aside, the Xperia line has promise. Check out this video of a live comparison of the two tablets side by side. You'll be able to see that the devices are pretty similar in form. Well, actually, the Tablet Z has a little bit larger screen size but other than the actual appearance of the two tablets are not too far apart.

Possible concerns

Gizmodo noticed that there were issues while testing the new device stating that the "overall experience was frequently laggy and slow, and there were some crashes. Hopefully that will be addressed before the Tablet Z goes on sale in May".

It looks as if Sony still has some work to do but the device sounds promising.

Concluding thoughts

Has Sony come up with a tablet that will be on-par with the iPad? Mashable says that "for all it has going for it, the Xperia Tablet Z isn't really an iPad challenger". In fact, they say that "the one spec that matters most, of course, is the price, and here's where the Xperia Z stumbles. It starts at $499 for 16GB, and $599 for 32GB".

I would think that Sony will really have to one-up the tablet leader in order to make a dent in the market and I'm not sure that the waterproof feature is enough.

However, there is little doubt that Sony has created a very nice new Android tablet that packs a ton of features for the mobile user in you.

What do you think?
