This Holi, traffic violations will get you arrested - Indian Express

This Holi, if you are caught violating traffic rules, you won't get away with just a fine. The Delhi traffic police on Sunday said persons found violating these rules are liable to be arrested and their vehicles impounded.

The Delhi Police issued an advisory for Holi celebrations announcing elaborate traffic arrangements to ensure safety of motorists on roads and check incidents of drink driving, over-speeding, dangerous driving, triple riding, driving/riding without helmet and other traffic offences.

"Special checking teams with alcometers and speedometers will be deployed at major intersections to detect and prosecute violations. In case of drink driving, besides prosecution, the drivers are liable to be arrested and their vehicles impounded," Additional Commissioner of Police (Traffic) Anil Shukla said.

Last year on Holi, 8,526 people were prosecuted for drink driving, over-speeding, triple riding, dangerous driving, traffic signal violations, driving/riding without helmet and other such offences.

About 200 special checking teams will be deployed across Delhi to check drink driving, police said.

"Drink driving is now punishable with a jail term and suspension of driving licence, besides a fine. This year, up to March 15, 6,809 drivers have been prosecuted for drink driving out of which 948 drivers have been awarded jail terms. Driving Licences of 99 persons have been suspended," Shukla said.
