An iPhone with a wraparound screen - Mumbai Mirror

Apple Inc, which faces a tight battle with Samsung over smartphone supremacy, has filed a patent for a new iPhone design featuring a wrap-around display and no buttons.

The display would cover the entire surface of the phone and could include two AMOLED screens one on top of the other, allowing it to give "an illusion of depth perception... mimicking a 3D experience", The Telegraph reported.

The patent, filed in the US Patent and Trademark Office this week, states that there is a need for an improved form factor that allows functions to extend to more than one surface.

The company wants to maximise the utility of unused portions of devices, and has imagined an iPhone with rounded edges and curved surfaces front and back, capable of displaying information and responding to touch.

The wrap-around design would have no physical volume controls, no home button or hold switch, The Telegraph said. The functions would be performed by touch gestures.
