George Ferris celebrated in Valentine's Day Google Doodle - Telegraph.co.uk

The American was born on Valentine's Day 1859 in Illinois.

He designed and built the first Ferris wheel for the World's Columbian Exposition, also known as The Chicago World's Fair in 1893. Organisers held a contest to design an "original, daring and unique" landmark to rival the Eiffel Tower, the centrepiece of the Paris Exposition in 1889.

Trained as a bridge builder, Mr Ferris convinced authorities his plan for a 80-metre-tall rotating wheel, with 40 cars, each carrying up to 60 people would be safe. He also raised $400,000 from local investors to fund the construction.

The animated logo on Google's homepage today celebrates his achievement with a fairground scene featuring two Ferris wheels that spin in response to a click. The cars contain animals that are shown going on dates for Valentine's Day.

The first Ferris wheel was demolished in 1906, ten years after George Ferris himself died. The world largest modern Ferris wheel is in Singapore and stands 165 metres tall.
