By JOHN D. STOLLNokia Corp. on Monday published a short clip on YouTube's video service intended to hype the launch of another new Lumia device, one day before the Finnish company has a Lumia product event scheduled in London. The company last week launched a pair of new phones—the higher-end Lumia 928 for the U.S. market, and the lower-end Asha 501 for more budget-conscious buyers. Both products are intended to help Nokia arrest a steady decline in demand for its devices. The YouTube clip is only about 20 seconds long and focuses only on the device's camera lens. A full view of the phone isn't given, nor are any specifications. The words "more than your eyes can see" flash across the screen before the words "the new Nokia Lumia is coming." Nokia has invested heavily in camera technology in an attempt to set its phones apart. Rumors about a new Lumia have been circulating for months ahead of Tuesday's media event in London, ranging from speculation about the use of aluminum for the body and a larger user interface that may be similar to products known as "phablets," or a hybrid between a phone and a tablet. Nokia hasn't commented on the specific design or functions of Lumia devices that have not yet been launched. However, Chief Executive Stephen Elop has indicated Nokia will launch a series of new products in order to better compete with rivals such as Apple Inc. and Samsung Electronics Co. He has also said the company will stick with Microsoft Corp.'s Windows operating system as the software for the Lumia lineup. Nokia was once the dominant force in the global mobile-device business, but has seen its market share erode as the popularity of Apple's iPhone and Samsung's Galaxy has soared. Write to John D.
