Nokia Lumia 520 review: Windows Phone 8 handset with good specs, low price - Northern Voices Online

It must be the cheapest handset in its class. Nokia Lumia 520 is a great Windows Phone 8 handset with good specs and low price

The fifth offering of the Windows Phone 8 by the Finnish Tech giant Nokia, the Lumia 520 smartphone clearly represents the outstanding value for money. Competing against its own sibling Lumia 620, the handset is by far the cheapest Windows Phone 8 priced at Rs 10,499.

The company is offering the Lumia 520 in bright colour options including Yellow, red, cyan, white and black. Though not the slimmest phone in the market with 9.9mm thick, but the gadget is quite easy to handle given the weight at 124g coupled with the svelte frame which makes it very comfortable to hold and use.

The Lumia 520 has a 4in, scratch proof IPS display with a resolution of 800×480 megapixels. The resolution provides a pixel density of 233ppi, which is slightly less than the competitor Lumia 620′s 3.8in screen but more than most budget smartphones at this price point. Even as the screen does a decent job at displaying the attractive Windows Phone interface, the colours at times appear washed out. Besides the viewing angles are poor and the screen can be tough to see in direct sunlight.

The right panel houses the volume rocker, power/ standby button as well as the camera shortcut key. The Nokia Lumia 520 comes with 5-megapixel camera at the rear which can record video at up to 720p. The camera is an autofocus rather than fixed focus system, which is usually on-board of most budget smartphones. However, the handset does not have a front camera.

Lumia 520 runs on Windows 8, latest iteration of Microsoft's mobile-OS and has features like enhanced performance, USSD commands support, resizable live tiles and more.Just like the other Lumia devices, Nokia Lumia 520 comes with several exclusive (and non-exclusive) Nokia apps such as the HERE Drive+, HERE Maps and Nokia Music. However, the popular City Lens app is not available on the Lumia 520 as it does not have a compass.

The Lumia 520 is powered by a 1GHz dual-core Snapdragon S4 processor and Adreno 305 GPU. It comes with 512MB of RAM, 8GB of internal storage, which is expandable by another 64GB via a microSD card. The company is also offering 7GB of cloud storage via SkyDrive for this smartphone. It comes with a 1430mAh battery, which is slightly larger than the 1300mAh battery on the Lumia 620. The fully charged battery easily lasted a complete day with regular usage. It has connectivity options including GPRS, EDGE, Speed, WLAN, Bluetooth and 3G.
