On Wednesday, an overcrowded bus had skidded off the road and plunged into Beas river on Kullu-Ani road at Jhiri. Rescue teams had recovered 32 bodies and rescued 24 people trapped in the wreckage of the bus. The bus with licence number HP 66-3855 was on its way to Ani, bordering Mandi, from Kullu. Most of the victims were women and school students who were returning home after the day's work. Meanwhile, the Mandi police on Thursday arrested driver of the bus, Ankush (34), He was allegedly on his cellphone when the accident took place. "There are also allegations that he was a drug addict — a fact yet to be investigated by the police," Mandi SP R S Negi said. Negi added while the conductor died following the accident, Ankush had jumped out of the bus before it plunged into the river. Director General of Police B Kamal Kumar has set up a special investigation team under IG (Tourists Traffic and Railway Police) to oversee the investigations. "I have ordered all SPs and IPGs to take steps against such accidents," said Kumar. Mandi Sub-Divisional Magistrate Subh Karan has also started a magisterial probe into the accident following orders from Deputy Commissioner Devash Kumar.
