1 bn monthly users, over 200 bn photos: Key numbers from Facebook's Q4 results - Firstpost

Facebook reported its Q4 revenue for the year 2012 which was at $1.585 billion, versus $1.131 billion a year ago. The company also saw its ad revenue from mobile increase, with that revenue stream now accounting for 23 percent of total ad revenue, compared to 14 percent in the third quarter of 2012.

More importantly CEO Mark Zuckerberg said that Facebook was now a mobile company, adding that the company would continue to push out better features on their current apps and newer mobile apps as well.

Facebook also released some other key numbers to investors. Here's a quick look at some of them.

• The number of Monthly active users (MAUs) for Facebook stood at 1.06 billion as of 31 December, 2012 which is a 25 percent increase year-over-year.

• The daily active users (DAUs) were 618 million on average for December 2012, which is a 28 percent increase year-over-year.

• As far as mobile MAUs were concerned, the number stood at 680 million as of 31 December, 2012, which is a massive 57 percent year-over-year increase.

• Most importantly, the number of mobile DAUs exceeded web DAUs for the first time in the fourth quarter of 2012 for Facebook.

• Facebook has now seen over 1.13 trillion 'likes' since the button was launched in February 2009

• It has seen over 219 billion photos being uploaded since the photo uploading was enabled in 2005. This excludes deleted photos and if Facebook wanted to include all photos ever uploaded, the estimate they have is 265 billion. That is a lot of photos as far as Facebook is concerned.

Of Facebook 1 billion users, the median age of the user is about 22 and the top five countries where people connected from at the time it reached this milestone were Brazil, India, Indonesia, Mexico and the United States. ( Alphabetical order)

If one were to look at these numbers, its evident that both mobile and photos are the biggest drivers as far as Facebook's growth is concerned.

Facebook has drastically improved its mobile app experience for Android and iOS users by revamping both apps. The Android app went native (meaning it is now built from scratch using Android's Software Development Kit) thus ensuring more stability and speed. Facebook also bought the popular photo-sharing and editing app Instagram last year, a good move, given how big photos are on the site.

Zuckerberg knows that for Facebook the money is in mobile and photos, and he has the numbers to back it up.
