Google updates Hangouts app to support merged SMS conversations - Times of India

NEW DELHI: Google has updated the Hangouts messaging app for Android bringing merged conversation threads for SMS and Hangout (erstwhile Google Talk) chats.

Google has announced that the new version of the app, Hangouts 2.1, is rolling out to all users over the next few days.

Following the update, users will be able to control whether they want to send a message via Hangouts or SMS with the flip of a switch, and it would be easy to distinguish between different types of messages in a thread. Presently, SMS and Hangouts messages from the same user are displayed in different threads.

Users can choose to merge and unmerge conversations as per their preference.

The updated Hangouts app also includes a simplified contact list. It now offers two main sections in contacts — People you Hangout with and Phone Contacts, making it simpler to navigate, and easier to use for SMS.

The app has also got its own homescreen widget for quick access to recent conversations.

In addition to the changes, the update also includes better quality video calls, and improved SMS and MMS reliability, as per Google. At the time of filing this story, we had not received the update on the India Play Store.

In November 2013, Google updated the Hangouts app to support the SMS feature allowing users to choose the app as their default app for sending text messages.
