Google has rolled out new version of Hangouts for Android, which eliminates one of the biggest bugbears for Hangouts users. Hangouts 2.1 will be rolling out to all devices later this week and will be available on the Play Store.
As per Google's official post, the new version will finally bring SMS and Hangouts messages from the same contact in one inbox. This means you can seamlessly continue chatting via SMS when you are not on Hangouts too. This will come as a great relief for users as it would save them agony of starting the conversation all over again or picking up the thread. Users can also choose whether they want to send and receive messages through SMS or Hangouts and can also unmerge conversations, if they preferred that.
Hangouts 2.1 also offers simplified contact list which will split user contacts in two sections; phone contacts and frequent Hangouts contacts. Depending on the list, users will be able to choose either SMS or Hangout for chatting with their contacts.
A homescreen widget too has been added to give users to get quick access to their recent conversations. Google has also claimed that the new updates will offer better quality video calls along with improved MMS and SMS reliability.
