Unseemly scramble as telcos jostle to sell Galaxy S5 - iTWire

Pick me! Pick me! Australian telcos are falling over each other to sell Samsung's latest Galaxy S5 smartphone.

The device was officially announced in Australia last night at a galactic galah event at Sydney's harbourside Museum of Contemporary Art.

We know the specs already, so there were no surprises. The most notable aspect of the phone's Australian launch is the alacrity with whichour major telcos are boasting about the fact that they will be selling it. Retail is about $900, but most will buy it on plans.

The scramble is most unseemly. It's just a phone.

"Vodafone doubles data for new Samsung Galaxy S5," screamed Vodafone, offering a $60 a month plan with 3GB of included data, double its normal offering.

"Optus pre-orders lift-off for Samsung Galaxy S5," yelled Optus, announcing it will take orders from today (though no deliveries from it or anyone else until 11 April).

Telstra, as market leader, was a little more restrained. "Customers who can't wait until 11 April to secure their Galaxy S5, can pre-order from 9am 27 March." Telstra also announced it will be selling the phone's 'wearable' accessories.

It is easy to understand their enthusiasm. The Samsung Galaxy S4 has been the biggest selling phone in the world since its release a year ago. The release of a new Samsung phone now engenders the sort of excitement once only exhibited with a new Apple iPhone.

It's a nice phone. But take it easy, guys.
