BlackBerry lets users share photos in multi-person BBM chats in latest update - Firstpost

BlackBerry is stepping on the gas pedal when it comes to BBM for rival platforms Android and iOS. The company is currently working on a Windows Phone 8 version of the app and is already on board as one of the first few apps to officially launch for the Nokia X. And now BBM is about to see a big update that could soon be seen on the different platforms for the app.

The Canadian company has now announced that BBM will now support photo sharing in 'multi-person' chats, which was hitherto limited in functionality. This comes as an addition to existing sharing options such as sending voice notes, sharing location, and sending files from your Dropbox cloud. Earlier, users needed to create a BBM Group to share pictures with multiple users, and there was no option to share pictures directly with two or more contacts without a Group.

In the forthcoming update, BlackBerry will also let users send larger files over BBM. "While our file size limit on shared files has historically been set at 6MB, we're increasing this to 16MB in the next release of BBM," said the company in a blog post. The company has also slightly increased the size of the emoticons. "For example, the 6MB transfer limit today allows you to send 6 seconds of 1080p HD video (recorded on a BlackBerry Z30 smartphone). With the increase to 16MB, you will be able to send 16 seconds of video using the same settings. We've also increased the size of the emoticons slightly after feedback from you, our customers. "

Earlier, the company had announced the launch of BBM Shop which would let users buy stickers and other items through the app. And the company has also brought BBM Voice and Channels to Android and iOS.

With these major improvements, BlackBerry seems ready to take on the likes of WeChat, Kik and Line, which have fast become the go-to choice for those looking for a more-than-messaging experience. However, it remains to be seen whether BBM can indeed bring the fight to these apps which have been long entrenched, while BBM still is a relatively new player on Android and iOS.
