WhatsApp Hit by Outage - PC Magazine

The problems come several days after Facebook shelled out $16 billion for the messaging app.

What does $16 billion get you? An outage, apparently.

Messaging app WhatsApp on Saturday was inaccessible for many users around the globe. PCMag's Stephanie Mlot reported that the app just refuses to load. "First it wouldn't let me send messages. I deleted the app and reinstalled it," she said. "It let me re-register, but won't actually load my contacts or chats. The spinning wheel just keeps going, like it's thinking. But clearly it's not."

"Sorry we currently experiencing server issues. we hope to be back up and recovered shortly," WhatsApp tweeted this afternoon.

The problems come several days after Facebook shelled out $16 billion for the messaging app in an effort to expand its reach and tap into WhatsApp's 450 million users.

WhatsApp users were quick to point the finger at the social-networking site, or joke that Facebook was behind the downtime.

This is not the first time that WhatsApp has experienced an outage, though. The last tweet on the @wa_status feed prior to today's message was about a Dec. 7 outage. There was also downtime on Nov. 3, Oct. 15, and Aug. 4, among other times. But today's problems are no doubt more newsworthy now that Facebook has paid an exorbitant amount of money for the service.
