Barcelona - Sony on Monday released an update to its Xperia range with the Z2, at the Mobile World Congress taking place in Barcelona.

The new device retains many of the same features that people liked in the Z1, namely that it is powered by a Qualcomm 2.3GHz quad core processor and 16GB of internal memory and 3GB of RAM.

Similarly, it is also water and dust proof, enabling users of the device to produce underwater video and images without any additional cases.

Sony also updated the Tablet Z with the launch of the Z2 which is also expected to retail in the premium segment when they make their South African debut.

The launch is intended to offer an alternative Android device to the Samsung Galaxy S5, also announced at the global showcase.

SA price

"The Xperia Z2 and the Xperia Tablet Z2 are both simple in design, relying on glass and metal materials to give a premium look and feel," said Julian Jest, Research Analyst at Informa Telecoms and Media.

According to industry research though, the growth for smartphones will shift toward lower priced devices, especially as more consumers from developing markets adopt the internet-linked technology.

Sony has moved to capture a wider audience with the launch of the Xperia M2.

It uses a slightly lower powered 1.2GHz quad core processor with 1GB of RAM and 8GB of memory onboard.

"Completing the line-up of new devices is the Xperia M2, which has a very similar look and feel to the Xperia Z2, but is in fact a mid-range device, and will launch at around รข‚¬220. This is an extremely competitive package, especially given that LTE is included, technology which is typically reserved for high end smartphones," said Jest.

It is still too early to tell at what price these devices will range in SA, but the falling rand does not give one confidence that the price will appeal to most South Africans.
