Snapchat's latest problem: Porn bots and spam - Firstpost

Weeks after Snapchat's user database was hacked, the app is facing a new problem. Porn bots, which are spamming users with nude pictures in exchange for an app download link.

According to CNN, "The spam messages appear with photo of a nude woman. A caption below asks the recipient to add "her" as a friend on messaging app Kik to receive more nude pictures. If the user follows through with the request, he or she will be prompted to download a mobile application. The mobile applications vary — many are games."

The Spam-scam has been discovered by researchers at Symantec's security response team. According to Kevin Haley, director of Symantec's security response team, the nude-picture trick is an old one. However Haley adds that the "mobile app developers aren't likely behind the scam but are likely firms hired by the app makers to increase downloads."

Snapchat recently update its app to allow users to opt out of its "Find Friends" feature. The Find Friends feature was recently used to hack into the app's database and information of nearly 4.6 million users was leaked online.

Post-the hacking the number of spam messages have also gone up in the app. Users can block these spam messages by going into privacy settings and changing who can send them snaps. Choose the "My Friends" option in the section and it will block random Snapchat messages from coming into your phone.
