Samsung Galaxy S5 vs HTC One – Specs and Price Review 2014

It's hard to compare two phones when one doesn't even technically exist yet, but we will give it a try.

While the HTC One has been out for a while and proven itself to be a really great phone, we don't know exactly what to expect from the Samsung Galaxy S5. If the the S4 is any indicator, expect the S5 to be a powerhouse. Here's what we know and what we like – or expect to like – about the HTC One and the Samsung Galaxy S5.

HTC One

The style of the HTC One is the first thing you will notice about it. The body is completely made of aluminum, giving it a sturdy feel in your hand despite its thinness. The display is stunningly crisp and clear, making text, images, and video jump off the screen. It is currently one of the best, if not the best, displays on the market. Dual front facing speakers make listening without bluetooth externals pleasurable, giving sound that you wouldn't expect from a little smartphone. The quad core processor is speedy quick, and the simplified interface with BlinkFeed on the home screen is a joy to use. The camera is good, though not as megapixel rich as some of the competitors, and it has great editing software. While we would've liked to have an SD slot and user removable battery, I guess you can't have it all. The MSRP on this device is a whopping $599.99, but you can get it as cheap as $99 with a two year contract from one of the major service providers.

Samsung Galaxy S5

Although the release of yet another Samsung Galaxy S-something is enough to make me want to stick forks in my eyes, I may actually be interesting in taking a gander at the upcoming S5, due to be released in April. The word on the street is that a new generation of Galaxy Gear will be released at the same time, supposedly with more functionality and less bulk – maybe this time the device will be attractive enough that style conscious folks would consider wearing it. Rumor has it that the S5 will have an entirely new look and feel, much to the delight of those who are yawning at the prospect of yet another identically designed Samsung device. Another flaming rumor is that this device will be able to scan your iris to log you in – very James Bond like. We will have to wait and see if this is a reality or not. As far as the other technical details go, expect the S5 to be fast, have a gorgeous display, and all the gadgets and gizmos that you could ever want or need.

HTC and Samsung are both on the forefront of cell phone design, giving the folks at Apple a run for their money. The likelihood of you buying either of these phones and thinking it a dud is highly unlikely, so either purchase is probably a very safe bet. Those who like fancified features and extras – even some very fancy useless extras – will prefer the Samsung Galaxy S5. If you like simplicity with your performance and a sleek design, HTC One is a great alternative to an iPhone.
