January end marked the official entry of China's popular phone maker Oppo in the Indian market. The company forayed into the growing and competitive Indian mobile space with its Oppo N1 priced at Rs 39,999. Considering its 6-inch display and the price tag, the device outright competes with the Nokia Lumia 1520 and the Samsung Galaxy Note 3. Here's a quick specs comparison of the three massive devices, to find who has the best specs on paper.
Oppo N1
Oppo N1 with a rotating camera
Unlike most of the other Chinese brands that target the budget Indian market, Oppo has entered the premium marketplace. The USP of the N1 is its rotating 13MP camera that can be used as a rear as well as front-facing camera. Oppo says the rotation has been tested 100,000 times and this means you can swivel it 40 times a day for 7 years, before it decides to conk off. Besides, it is also the first phone to officially support CyanogenMod, the most popular aftermarket Android ROM. The smartphone also runs Oppo's Color OS, based on Android 4.2 Jelly Bean. Sporting a large 5.9-inch 1080p IPS display, it comes powered by a quad-core Snapdragon 600 SoC clocked at 1.7GHz coupled with 2GB of RAM. It offers16GB and 32GB onboard storage options but there is no room for external memory.
The N1 packs in a 3610mAh battery, so at least usage time should be close to if not more than a day. However, we can confirm this only when the device reaches our test labs for a review. The connectivity options include 3G, Wi-Fi and Bluetooth. The O Click – a Bluetooth accessory – can be attached in a keyring and used to take pictures remotely or sound an alarm if you can't find the phone.
Samsung Galaxy Note 3
Now with improved SPen functionality
The Note 3 comes with a smaller display than the other two devices at 5.7-inches, and pixel density that goes all the way up to 386ppi. The Note 3's trump card always has been the S-Pen, and Samsung has managed to add a lot more functionality to it. On the camera front, it packs in a 13MP rear camera and a 2MP front-facing one. The device runs on Android 4.3 with TouchWiz on top and Samsung has already started rolling out 4.4 KitKat update. The Indian version of the Note 3 is powered by an Exynos 5 Octa 5420 processor (1.3GHz Cortex A7 and 1.9GHz Cortex A15). It offers 16/32/64GB onboard storage options, expandable up to 64GB via microSD card slot. The device also packs in a 3,200mAh battery. You can read our Galaxy Note 3 review for a more in-depth look at the phone.
Nokia Lumia 1520
With a 20MP camera
With a large 6-inch 1080p display, the Lumia 1520 does not disappoint either. It comes with Nokia's patented ClearBack display technology for enhanced contrast and deeper blacks, which makes the Windows Phone UI light up. It also gets the Nokia Black update. It runs on a quad-core Qualcomm Snapdragon 800 SoC with 2GB of RAM. The 32GB internal memory can be expanded further up to 64GB via microSD card. The key highlight of the 1520 is its 20-megapixel PureView camera, with a reworked Nokia Camera app as well as a bunch of other apps such as Nokia Pro Camera, Nokia Refocus and all the other Nokia Lens goodies. Nokia packs in a 3400mAh battery to fuel the device. It's the best Lumia yet, as we concluded in our review.
Here is the the specs comparison table below:
The bottom line
Compared to the Oppo N1 and Lumia 1520, the Note 3 has a smaller display, but that does not mean less screen real estate as the resolution is the same 1080p on all three. While we can't say much about the N1′s display just yet, the Note 3 and Lumia 1520 have great viewing angles and punchy colours along with deep blacks. The Note 3 however, is the most sleek and lightest among the three at 168 grams and 8.3mm thickness. You get a multitude of sensors such as a barometer, thermometer, humidity gauge, and gesture sensors along with the usual suspects like compass, accelerometers and gyroscope. One thing that could hold back the Oppo is the Snapdragon 600 processor, as Nokia and Samsung appear to offer more powerful chipsets with the Snapdragon 800 and Exynos 5 Octa 5420 respectively.
Nokia steals the show when it comes to the camera though. The 20MP camera is second only to the Lumia 1020, while Oppo brings in innovation with a rotating 13MP rear and front-facing camera. Unlike Note 3 and Lumia 1520, Oppo N1 limits storage capacity and the lack of external memory card could be a big factor. It also doesn't support the Wi-Fi ac draft, so it's not as future-proof as the other two. It also lacks GLONASS, which helps considerably in keep location lock times low. On the other hand, it gets an extremely powerful 3,610mAh battery, that should ideally last very long.
Finally we have the pricing and all three carry a hefty price tag; the 16 GB Oppo N1 is priced at Rs 39,999, while the 32GB units of Note 3 and Lumia 1520 are priced at Rs 44,690 and Rs 42,898 respectively. The N1 has many firsts to its credit, but the slightly inferior Snapdragon 600 processor and the hefty price tag asked by the unknown brand could work against the phone. As we have already seen in our reviews, the Note 3 and Lumia 1520 are extremely good at what they do. So Oppo has its task cut out.
