Micromax, the Indian smartphone brand has certainly come a long way, upping the ante with an aggressive global strategy by signing on Hugh Jackman as its brand ambassador. And now, it is all set to expand its operations overseas.
India's No 2 smartphone brand which sold its first handset - a $30 made-in-China model--will start selling phones and tablets in Russia from 24 January, reported Times of India.
"Yes, we have global ambitions and I can promise you that we are going to take Russia by storm. We are going to show that an Indian company can also succeed on the global scale," Micromax co-founder Rahul Sharma told ToI at the Consumer Electronics Show, currently underway in Las Vegas.
The company made a showing at the world's largest technology showcase event - CES 2014 in Las Vegas. This is first time Micromax, or for that matter a big Indian phone company, is showing off its products at CES.
Amid a slew of wearable technology, massive television screens and new futuristic vehicles, Micromax launched the LapTab, a dual-boot Android and Windows 8 tablet. The LapTab is the first Intel-powered tablet to have a dual-boot OS.
The company, which started out selling IT software and telecoms gear, entered the handset market with cheap phones featuring bigger screens, and the capability to use two SIM cards so customers can take advantage of bargains from competing carriers - a feature Nokia was slow to match.
Now Micromax is looking to broaden its market by wooing brand-conscious Indians with more spending power.
In an interview to Firstpost earlier, Shubhodip Pal, Micromax's chief of marketing officer said that the Russia market is tough to crack and they have aligned with some big media partners there.
"As far as Russia is concerned, the market that is very similar to India. It has 143 million people with 85 percent internet penetration. Also people change their handsets every 11 months there. Mobile internet is also growing there in a big way, mobile internet consumption is growing as well. We feel that if we crack Russia, the rest of the European market should not be a problem," he said.
Following Russia, Micromax plans to enter Romania, where competitors also include Samsung and Nokia. Micromax has also tried to tap the Brazilian and the Middle Eastern markets with basic phones, but did not manage to build scale and closed the operations.
So, will Micromax's global plan be a success?
