(AFP Relaxnews) -- Samsung launches the Galaxy Tab 3 Lite, a 7-inch tablet for cost-conscious consumers.
It doesn't have a high-resolution display, nor does it have a front-facing camera, but when it goes on sale, the latest addition to Samsung's constantly growing range of tablets is expected to cost less than $150.
What buyers will get is a choice between white or black, Android Jelly Bean 4.2 as the operating system, a 1.2GHz dual-core processor and 8GB of on board storage, expandable by 32GB via a microSD slot.
As well as colors, consumers will be able to select connectivity. There will be a wi-fi-only model but a 3G version, for mobile use, will also be available. Both versions also offer Bluetooth and a built-in GPS but despite its lightweight specifications, the tablet weighs 310g so it won't be quite the most portable of devices to carry around.
Still, if you do head out with it, Samsung claims the Galaxy Tab 3 Lite will offer eight hours of video playback on a single battery charge. The company has also packed it full of its own apps and imaging features to help owners get the most from its widescreen display and rear facing camera.
Although Samsung won't be confirming prices for the tablet until its territory by territory launch, it is expected to compete directly with the lowest and most aggressively priced devices in the seven-inch segment. In other words this will be a sub $150 tablet.
That, plus the fact that it comes from Samsung rather than an unknown, white-box manufacturer will no doubt make the tablet a potential hit. It's just a shame that in order to keep costs down that Samsung has decided to do away with a front-facing camera as tablets are great for video calling.
