PC MAKER HP announced its return to the smartphone market on Tuesday with the launch of the HP Slate 6 and HP Slate 7 phablet devices.
HP hasn't revealed many technical specifications, but said that both the Slate 6 and Slate 7 will have quad-core processors powering their respective 1280x720 and 1280x800 resolution IPS displays.
In an interview with Recode, HP also revealed that it will launch the devices running Google's ageing Android 4.2 Jelly Bean mobile operating system, and the firm didn't mention an imminent upgrade to Android 4.4 Kitkat. The HP Slate 7 will measure 9.5mm thick, while the smaller HP Slate 6 phablet will be thinner at "less than 9mm".
While HP is keeping most details under wraps, we also know that both the Slate 6 and Slate 7 will feature dual 5MP and 2MP cameras, 16GB of internal storage, microSD card support up to 32GB, a dual-SIM slot and 3G and WiFi connectivity.
There's no 4G connectivity, but that's likely because HP is targeting the affordable smartphone market, with the phablets set to debut in India next month.
HP SVP Ron Coughlin said, "Consumers are looking to consolidate their phones and tablets, which is propelling the voice tablet market.
"This is an exciting new category that represents a meaningful growth opportunity for HP. Our HP Slate VoiceTab provides consumers with a high-quality product at a great value."
There's no word as to whether HP will release the Slate 6 and Slate 7 in the UK, and HP has not yet responded to our request for comment. µ
