Although at Rs 7.42 lakh to Rs 11.1 lakh, the pricing is in the range of its two key rivals in the sedan segment, Honda hopes to use the higher fuel efficiency of its diesel variant as a unique selling proposition (USP). The company said that the diesel engine variant is the mo st-fuel efficient vehicle, offering 26 kilometers to a litre. On its part, the Hyundai Verna claims to give a mileage of 22 kilometers to a litre of diesel.
Diesel variants of the new City will retail from Rs 8.62 lakh to Rs 11.1 lakh, while petrol versions are priced between Rs 7.42 lakh and Rs 10.98 lakh (ex-showroom Delhi). The petrol variant of the new Honda City comes with the existing 1.5 litre iVTEC engine, while the diesel version sports the recently launched 1.5 iDTEC diesel motor.
At the time the third generation of Honda City was discontinued in November, it was placed third in the sweepstakes with Verna on top with nearly a third of the market share in the segment, and Vento marginally ahead of the City. The new Honda City is the second car with a diesel engine variant after the Japanese auto giant unveiled the Amaze last year that has helped it garner a higher marketshare in that segment. "With the best of both petrol and diesel technologies available in Honda City, we are very confident about the success of the model, which will significantly contribute to our business growth in India," Honda Cars India Ltd (HCIL) president and CEO Hironori Kanayama told reporters.
