Banks in the city have sought more time from the police to put in place the required security systems at their ATM kiosks during a meeting over the issue on Saturday.

Even though the lax security at ATMs came into focus after the brutal attack on a Corporation Bank employee, Jyothi Uday, last November, the police have held more than six meetings with banks about the issue over the past year. Following the attack on Uday, the police exerted pressure on banks to act and also set a deadline of January 12 to comply with safety guidelines. Police personnel recently visited ATM kiosks in the city to verify the presence of systems such as CCTV cameras, 24/7 guards and burglar alarms.

According to City Police Commissioner Raghavendra Auradkar, of the 3,651 ATMs in the city, 394 did not have guards while 2,372 did not have alarms and 1,764 lacked external CCTV cameras. As many as 413 did not even have CCTV cameras inside the kiosks.

"Many banks have asked for more time to comply with the guidelines. Some have asked for 10 days or a month's time while others have sought three to six months," Auradkar said. A decision on the request is expected on Monday.
