Deputy commissioner of police (traffic) Vishwas Pandhre on Wednesday said the traffic police had taken action against 147 persons for drunk driving on December 31, in 2012. The number of cases this New Year's eve increased by 106. "Of these, 37 were detected by the Hinjewadi traffic division, which has received an award of Rs 2,000,'' Pandhre said.
The action against drunk driving was better planned this year. "On Tuesday night, we began our action from 10 pm onwards, instead of the usual 8 pm. The traffic police now also have five special interceptor vehicles equipped with breath analysers," said Pandhre.
"In addition to the 46 existing breath analysers, the traffic branch got 15 new ones which helped the police take swift action this time," said Pandhre. "Moreover, the traffic police had assistance from personnel at police stations and chowkeys," he added.
On the whole, 2013 saw a marked increase in the number drunk driving cases. In all cases, the persons were arrested and legal proceedings were initiated against them. The traffic police imposed compounding fees of nearly Rs 1 crore in cases of drunk driving.
During 2012, the traffic police had taken action against 4,169 persons. The number increased to 4765 in 2013. In December 2012, the traffic police took action against 702 persons. In December 2013, the number doubled to 1,526. "In nearly 40% of drunk driving cases in 2013, the drivers were below the age of 25. There have also been a few cases where young women and senior citizens were arrested," said Pandhre.
