KOREAN PHONE MAKER Samsung tried to silence a customer whose Galaxy S4 smartphone caught fire, but the firm's actions seem to have backfired.
Earlier in December, Youtube user GhostlyRich posted a video (below) that showed his Samsung Galaxy S4 handset catching fire while charging. Although the battery did not explode, this rendered the smartphone useless, Neowin reported, and given that the phone was still under warranty Rich contacted Samsung for a replacement.
This was where things started to get messy. Instead of coughing up a replacement phone, Samsung threw its toys out of the pram and ordered Rich to remove the video from Youtube before it would replace the crispy Galaxy S4 handset.
Samsung sent GhostlyRich a letter, which can be viewed here. The letter read, "As a condition of exchanging the phone with a similar model, *** agrees to remove his Youtube video from the following link https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=dc4duKuPrQ0 or any other link or statement relating to these matters and refrain from making other videos or statements about or relating to the matters set out herein."
Samsung's letter also demanded that GhostlyRich not disclose the settlement details.
This overbearing approach didn't quite to go plan, however. As well as causing users to criticise it on social networks, Samsung's settlement letter now has had over 270,000 views and GhostlyRich's video has racked up over 80,000 views.
It's still unclear what happened next, and whether Samsung has replaced the handset. The firm has yet to comment further. µ
