Samsung, which has been engaged in a series of legal fights globally with Apple, had claimed that some Apple products had infringed on three of its patents relating to the messaging technology used on mobile devices. Samsung said Apple's iPhone 4S, iPhone 5 models had violated two of the three patents under dispute.

"We are disappointed by the court's decision," the company said in a statement on Thursday, after the ruling. "We will continue to take the measures necessary to protect our intellectual property rights."

Today's ruling is in contrast to that of last year's when the South Korean court had ruled largely in favor of Samsung, concluding that Apple violated two of Samsung's standard-essential patents, while Samsung violated one Apple patent.

Samsung and Apple are currently involved in multiple lawsuits against each other over mobile technology patents.

In November, a federal jury in San Jose, Calif., ordered Samsung to pay Apple $290 million in damages for infringing Apple patents in a retrial. The ruling came on top of an original $640 million award that wasn't in dispute in the retrial.
