CHIP DESIGNER Qualcomm has announced a 64-bit processor, just months after one of its executives described the architecture as "a gimmick".
The Qualcomm Snapdragon 410 has 4G LTE capability, which the company said will be standard across the Snapdragon line.
The announcement comes less than two months after Qualcomm senior executive Anand Chandrasekher dismissed 64-bit technology in the iPhone 5S as "a gimmick". He was then subsequently reassigned.
The Snapdragon 410 system on chip (SoC) processor has an Adreno 309 GPU and is capable of supporting a 13MP camera and 1080p video playback along with WiFi, Bluetooth, FM and NFC. The chip is also capable of supporting up to three SIM cards simultaneously.
"We are excited to bring 4G LTE to highly affordable smartphones at a sub $150 price point with the introduction of the Qualcomm Snapdragon 410 processor," said Jeff Lorbeck, SVP and COO of Qualcomm Technologies, China. "The Snapdragon 410 chipset will also be the first of many 64-bit capable processors as Qualcomm Technologies helps lead the transition of the mobile ecosystem to 64-bit processing."
The low price point makes the chip viable even for mid-range devices. With the Motorola Moto G smartphone showing the possibilities for good quality budget handsets, the Snapdragon 410 might tip up in more like it, but with 4G and NFC on board.
Qualcomm said the Snapdragon 410 processor will support "all main operating systems", specifying Android, Windows Phone and the Firefox OS by name.
Qualcomm expects to offer chip sampling during the first half of the new year, with production starting in the second half. µ
