"Harley Davidson is not a mass-market product. We needed to have the infrastructure that all our global showrooms have. That's why it took time," said Rajiv Vohra, sales and dealer development of Harley Davidson, India, after opening the outlet at Sahakar Marg in the city.
The showroom will have its entire line up of 11 models with bike prices starting from Rs 6.5 lakh to Rs 32 lakh. But there are more to bikes than what the eye catches in the outlet.
The cult bike maker has a built lifestyle culture around the brand with riding gear, apparel and merchandise. Like the motorcycles, the merchandise too has high price tag. For example, the price of a jacket starts from Rs 6,500 and goes up to Rs 37,000.Since Harley Davidson started operations in India in 2010, it has sold more than 4,000 bikes in the country and 40 in Rajasthan. It has a 'complete knocked down' assembly unit in Haryana.
The premium motorcycle segment is rapidly growing in India along with Ducati, Suzuki, Honda, Kawasaki, and Hyosung stepping up expansion plans in various cities and towns. "Harley Davidson is planning to add another three locations to its network in 2014, taking the total number of outlets to 16," said Vohra. Recently, Hyosung of South Korea opened its outlet in Jaipur, setting th e stage for competition.
Apart from motorcycles, all luxury car makers have their footprint in Jaipur. While top-end cars bringing in utility along with luxury, the same can't be said of bikes. But an industry expert said that these brands know how to create a market. "With a showroom in the city, it always connects better with the customers," he said.
