The year 2013 had been a landmark year for Google and India. Google looked at India as a good potential market this year. It is now eyeing the Indian schools.
Google launched the Nexus 5 and Nexus 7 2 in India faster than last year. Soon it also started selling the Chrome OS based Chromebook in India. Now Google is aiming to popularize the Chromebook laptops in schools in Andhra Pradesh. At the same time Apple is trying to strike a deal with the Turkish government on use of ipads in school kids.
In a pilot project Google will make 25 Chromebooks available in 4 schools. It will train the teachers and instructors in the school in the use of the required software applications, so that the devices can be used in schools with children. "The school instructors will teach core subjects using applications and software. We believe with interactive learning, the student will understand better and will take interest in the subjects," Ponnala Lakshmaiah, the state's minister for information technology, said according to EconomicsTime. The programme will run in collaboration with the Andhra Pradesh department of information and technology and will be implemented initially in Warangal district in 3 government and 1 private schools.
While Google is going with a 25 units pilot programme, Apple is aiming at a $4 billion deal on selling iPads for schools in Turkey.
According to a Turkish language publication emlakkulisi.com (via AppleInsider) Tim Cook, Apple Chief and top executives will be at Turkey next year to meet with President Abdullah Gül for the "Fatih Project". The project seeks to replace blackboards and textbooks with modern computing devices like tablets and laptops for school children. If through, the project will require Apple to supply 10.6 million tablets in phase one followed by another 2 to 2.5 milion in the next phase. That comes to a deal worth between $3 and $4 billion.
Whether Apple will engage with teachers training for the best use of iPads in education, is not known yet.
