The Photon Max dongle costs Rs 1,999, offers speeds of up to 6.2 Mbps and can connect up to five devices at one time within a 100-feet radius. The company says the dongle's strong in-building service makes it ideal for home usage.
"While wireless data connectivity has greatly increased the level of user experience on mobile devices, Photon Max Wi-Fi promises video speeds and will allow datahungry applications to run seamlessly between multiple users," Tata Docomo president-mobility Elango T said.
The dongle runs on CDMA technology, but the company will introduce another that runs on GSM technology within a fortnight. Existing customers of Tata Docomo Photon can upgrade their services to Wi-Fi by buying a new device and there is also a cash-back offer that pays back the cost of the device in 13 months. To create personal Wi-Fi zones, customers would have to choose from unlimited Wi-Fi plans ranging from Rs 650 to Rs 1,500.
Tata Teleservices, which operators under the Tata Docomo brand, had given up excess CDMA spectrum in all but two circles in the country.
The company did not comment on its intentions to add spectrum through the upcoming auctions or the plausibility of the government holding 800 Mhz auctions.
