Two of three men, who were riding a motorcycle late Saturday night, were killed on the spot after their vehicle collided with a speeding tipper lorry on Nungambakkam High Road– Kodambakkam High Road junction.
The third rider is undergoing treatment at a government hospital.
The police registered a case of accidental deaths and booked the lorry driver under sections 279 (rash driving), 337 (causing hurt by act endangering life) and 304 A (causing death by negligence) of the Indian Penal Code.
The deceased were identified as J. Santhosh (21) of Kannamma Thottam, 4 Street, Peravallur, and K. Kesavaperumal (22) of Makkees Garden, Greams Road. The injured is P. Vignesh (23) of Erikkarai Street, Kotturpuram, an engineering student in a private college in Sriperumbudur.
While Santhosh worked in a private firm, Kesavaperumal was into family business.
According to inspector R. Nanda Kumar Johnson of Pondy Bazaar traffic investigation, the accident took place around 2.45 a.m.
"Santhosh was riding the motorcycle with his two friends seated pillion. The trio were coming from Kodambakkam High Road and heading to Greams Road to drop Kesavaperumal. The lorry was coming from Thiruvanmiyur and heading to Nungambakkam when the accident took place," he said.
Santhosh and Kesavaperumal died on the spot while Vignesh suffered fractures on his leg and was rushed to Rajiv Gandhi Government General Hospital, Mr. Johnson said.
Lorry driver Murugan (41), a native of Thiruvannamalai, was arrested. He was remanded to custody in the afternoon and sent to Puzhal prison.
The three friends were returning after watching a movie at a multiplex in Ashok Nagar.
