A screenshot obtained by TechCrunch shows that, for at least a small subsection of users, star ratings are being displayed immediately under the name on a business or place Page.
"We're extending star ratings on Facebook from mobile to desktop – to make it easier for people to discover great businesses around them. This is beneficial for both businesses and consumers," Facebook said in a statement.
"Star ratings encourage more people to rate a business, making it eligible to appear in News Feed and help others discover a business they didn't know about previously. For businesses themselves, this also leads to greater brand awareness."
Facebook has been allowing users to rate businesses on a five-star scale since early 2012, but those ratings have never been displayed so prominently on the Page.
Allowing users to rate a Page out of five helps to provide a sense of public sentiment towards a company, unlike the Like button which is used to express a wide range of sentiments including sympathy, solidarity, endorsement and, in some cases dislike.
As TechCrunch points out, the number of Likes something has indicates how present it is in the public's consciousness, but not necessarily how people generally feel about it.
It is not clear yet whether displaying this rating will be optional or mandatory for Page owners. However, many rival services like Yelp, Foursquare and TripAdvisor already display star ratings by default, forcing businesses to focus on customer service rather than just social media presence.
It will be interesting to see whether Facebook also extends this feature to allow users to rate individual posts. Many users have long been calling for a 'Dislike' button as well as a 'Like' button; a star rating system would allow users to let their friends know exactly what they think of their posts.
